Daniel Lee Kendall (DLK) did not plan for this. But it is the unexpected beginning to this story that is characteristic of DLK’s understated allure. It is quite simple really; after an evening spent drinking wine and enjoying the company of fine friends and fine musicians alike, Daniel penned a song. The nagging inspiration for which so many artists yearn had hit its mark. From there the textured lyrical landscapes and measured melodies that distinguish Daniel’s style began to pour forth, adding to a now truly impressive body of work.

There is a decidedly romantic quality attached to the image of an introverted, tinkering whiz kid who writes and records in his own company. One has the luxury of time to experiment, to try and try again, to make mistakes and try new things. This kind of liberation is too seldom an option in the age of money and time-poor songwriters. DLK puts it most deftly himself: “…for me it really helped being able to record and write at the same time. It's what gave my writing a lot more momentum.” DLK Studios (a bedroom on the Central Coast of NSW) has been a hub of creativity for some time, patiently housing the tools of Daniel’s trade. The absence of an additional set of hands to press play and ears to steer sounds, while at times frustrating for the young songwriter, has lent a valuable hand to developing the uniqueness of DLK’s sound. And that sound is something special to behold.

The Lost in the Moment EP is an artfully crafted sampling of Daniel Lee Kendall’s shy brilliance. Clever and at times lush, almost orchestral arrangements gain momentum, evoking a warm and at times awkward place. The staccato notes of title track Lost in the Moment reign in the vivid imagery of the first pangs of love. For the eager there is to be found elsewhere the drum machine anchored ease of The Point in This? and the calculated guitar driven meanderings of Gorgeous. These songs showcase a diverse, adventurous and highly intelligent songwriter. But for his savvy musical stylings and truthful lyrical content; Daniel’s true power lays within his voice. The quality of Daniel’s voice is stirring; it moulds the emotional dynamics of his songs, and is wielded with wisdom well beyond his years.

After lengthy toils in the seclusion of DLK studios, the best and only thing there was to do was share. Share with friends and strangers alike, these songs of hope and heartbreak. And here we are, on the cusp of the release of his debut EP. Listeners; prepare to be mesmerised, and taken on a very special journey indeed.
