Bombazine Black

Biography

“Matt Davis is the still centre of the hypnotic world that is Bombazine Black, playing deceptively simple guitar riffs that build in layers and ripple dreamily outwards, meeting in loving intersection with here a vibraphone, there a cello, sometimes a harmonium or a glockenspiel. Out of the barest, purest elements and melodies, the band builds up, wave by imperceptible wave, dreamy sonic landscapes that are transportational in the very best musical sense. It is completely tight -- Davis knows precisely what he is orchestrating around him -- and yet the effect, for the listener, is to enter a vast kind of looseness, an aural trance in which images unspool like movies inside our heads, and the chaos of the outside world recedes." Luke Davies, author ‘Candy’, ‘Isabelle the Navigator’, ‘God of Speed’.

Motion Picture is the second album from Melbourne-based instrumental band Bombazine Black, created by Gersey founding member M. Davis (Matt).

The band’s first album Here Their Dreams was released in 2009 to widespread critical acclaim. Using Paris as backdrop, the album experimented with the resonant simplicity of Matt’s arpeggio guitar playing with layered sounds from renowned guest artists.

Motion Picture takes the cinematic intricacy of Here Their Dreams and expands it to create a more intense dramatic score.

While Here Their Dreams centred on the intimate sounds and private moments of a city, Motion Picture draws on a wider world, from Berlin to Beechworth, from Paris to Los Angeles… focusing on in-between places; the rugged Australian bush, the highways of California, rainy nights in Montmartre… and the sense of motion that comes with long highways and open plains and overnight trains. With a full-band sound including strong percussion elements the album is a singular epic ride, where long, haunting symphonies meet fleeting moments of pure, intoxicating delight.

Davis’s vision is brought to life with the collaboration of artists Daryl Bradie (Gersey) on guitar, Dan Tulen (Gersey) on drums, Miles Browne (Art of Fighting) on bass, Taylor Holland (Monroe Mustang) on bass in LA, actress/musician Jayne Tuttle on piano and keyboards, Parisian jazz virtuoso Michael Emenau on vibraphone, and Eugene Ball (Allan Browne Quintet, Hoodangers et al) on trumpet.

Motion Picture was released September 3, 2010 on Youthful Chaos and distributed by new artist-run label Letters & Tapes.
