Clare Bowditch
Biography
A year on from the critically praised and loved 2004 debut release of Autumn Bone, Clare Bowditch and The Feeding Set offer their latest album, What Was Left, a hypnotically beautiful journey guided by the dulcet vocals and heartfelt tales of Bowditch.
Very few albums can claim to be as evocative, honest and truly magical as What Was Left. Originally intended as a solo project that was to feature an array of guest musicians, the collaboration of Autumn Bone ended up on a different path resulting in the foundation of the band. Of the dozen or so guests who started work on the project, four remained - Marty Brown (of Art of Fighting) on drums, J Walker (Machine Translations) on guitar, French horn player and vocalist Libby Chow, and bass player Warren Bloomer.
And after a month of Wednesday night dinners and rehearsals, the aptly named Feeding Set was born. Recorded between passing express trains by Clare's partner, producer and drummer Marty, in the front room of their Melbourne home, Autumn Bone was a gust of fresh air for Australian listeners and garnered Album of the Week accolades on national radio station Triple J as well as an array of respected local community stations.
Following on from national tours and large festivals as well as an abundance of exceptional supports including The Waifs, Missy Higgins, Pete Murray, Bernard Fanning, Paul Kelly, Cat Power and Elvis Costello, Clare Bowditch and The Feeding Set find themselves again clearly breaking down the boundaries between independent pop and folk, delivering an album that is both powerful and subtle.
What Was Left further proves what Autumn Bone so eloquently introduced audiences to: an unassuming originality, an incredible narrative sensibility and an uncanny ability to tell stories as achingly personal as they are beautiful and joyous.
The album has received tremendous support from Australian audiences and media alike and was nominated for Album of the Year 2005 by Triple J as well as in the top 5 Australian albums of year By Rolling stone. It is incredible to see how strong word of mouth can be, as the album keeps finding audiences both in Australia and internationally, such is its timeless beauty. We hope you enjoy!
