Matt Bailey
Biography
Book of Illumination presents eight new songs of telekinesis, tarot cards, faded movie queens and sinister imaginary friends, projected from deep inside the heart and mind of former seminarian Matt Bailey (Paradise Motel, SIR, Lee Memorial).
Produced by Brent Punshon (Adalita, Smog, Nation Blue, The Slits etc) at Melbourne's Head Gap Studios, Book of Illumination has Matt Bailey searching in the dark for a theatre seat between Scott Walker, Dory Previn and Eric Carmen.
For this album, Bailey elected to compose the songs on piano, within the relatively short period of two weeks. Turning his back on the laconic, guitar based approach of his solo debut, Book Of Illumination is the flipside of the coin – forged in a kinda personal Brill Building of the subconscious.
Recorded live in the studio, on electric piano, the songs are augmented by Melbourne jazz-improv saxophone legend Adam Simmons, and the harmonies of Monica Sonand (Magic Silver White), Raquel Solier (aka Fatti Frances) and Nicole Hurtubise.
Book of Illumination is the follow up to Bailey’s 2010 debut The Three I's "a powerfully realised enquiry into the nature of identity, that evokes an air of unease and underlying tension." (messandnoise)
Available on limited edition vinyl with download, from independent record stores.
