It is with much sorrow that we share the news of the passing of James Freud.
James Freud passed away this morning. James’ battle with alcoholism has been well chronicled. His two books on his recovery and five years sobriety were bestsellers and gave a lot of people who were suffering the same affliction comfort and hope.
Unfortunately, James has succumbed to his disease and taken his own life this morning.
James Freud commenced his music career at the age of 17 as a member of the Teenage Radio Stars who had their first Australian hit with ‘I Wanna Be Your Baby’. He signed with Michael Gudinski’s Mushroom Records label and had a successful solo career with the hit ‘Modern Girl’ from the album ‘Breaking Silence’ in 1980. James joined The Models in 1982 and wrote their smash hits ‘Barbados’, ‘and ‘Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight’ from their hugely successful ‘Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight’ album. Always a dynamic and energetic performer, James got a rousing reception each night of the 2006 Countdown Spectacular when he performed ‘Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight’ to the sell out crowds across Australia.
James was signed to Mushroom Records and was a close family friend of Michael and Sue Gudinski; Michael Gudinski was devastated to hear about James’ passing this morning.
“James was a true pioneer – he successfully crossed over from Australia’s burgeoning punk scene in the early 80s, to then create some of the most played tracks in Australia’s recording history. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, the industry, and music fans everywhere.”
He should be remembered as one of Australia’s shining lights in the music industry. His family is devastated and would appreciate privacy during this difficult time.
James Randall Freud is survived by his wife Sally, and sons Harrison and Jackson.

Whether it’s a collection of CDs, vinyl, song lyrics or sheet music, we collect the songs by writers that inspire us; in life, love, events, politics, religion… the ‘inspirational’ list is endless. And as music lovers do, we revisit that collection over and over again; sometimes to remember a time in our lives or maybe to try and forget one; whatever the reason the collections we own are very much a part of our lives.
The Mushroom Music Song Book is our collection; the ones we find ourselves turning back to. Beautifully designed with lyrics, sheet music, photographs and stories, the book features fifty truly amazing Australian compositions by songwriters from iconic Mushroom Music.
The Mushroom Music Song Book was created by going back to the songwriters themselves and together they have shared the many stories, in most cases for the first time, of how their songs were brought to life. In addition to these personal anecdotes, the songwriter’s musical peers and associates have contributed their own fond memories. Whether you are a musician or a music fan, the book is a visually stunning, historical, insightful and creatively compiled collection of the songs that Australians revisit time and time again. And there are sure to be more than just a few that have found themselves in the soundtrack to your life too.
Mushroom Music Publishing is immensely proud to represent the songs and song writers within this book and on behalf of them is taking a bow that will assuredly lead to multiple encores or in this case further volumes.
The creation of this book was the culmination of the vision of two companies: Mushroom Music Publishing and Sasha Music Publishing. Sasha Music Publishing (AMPD’s rock and pop label) is proud to be Mushroom Music Publishing’s print publisher. This is a significant partnership as it brings the music of Australian artists to their audience in an important yet previously under utilised way - through print music and digital print download. Quality, accessible transcriptions are a vital part of learning and enjoying music. Sasha Music Publishing takes pride in transcribing songs so they are accessible to play while still retaining the essence of the song. Sasha Music Publishing highly values the relationship with Mushroom Music Publishing and is committed to representing Mushroom’s writers in print.
The Mushroom Music Songbook is available through all good music retailers and book stores.
Order code: 0801150640 RRP $79.95“This book is a collection of the great Australian songwriters that Mushroom Music Publishing represent. It was extremely hard to limit it to fifty songs. Ian James and the Mushroom Music Publishing team have over the years worked extremely hard to sign the very best songwriters both domestically and overseas. They have built and managed a brilliant roster of songwriters and an extremely impressive catalogue of songs that cover many genres of music.
I am very proud of the results that Mushroom Music Publishing have had with the catalogue. From placing songs with artists to record, hooking up collaborations, placing songs in film, television and advertising, right through to the many songwriting workshops that we host. It is one of the most successful companies within The Mushroom Group and has an incredibly strong reputation throughout the world.
This is much more than a book of song lyrics, each song has an original story written by the songwriter about their song plus an anecdote from a music peer or associate. It is a great addition to any music fan or musician’s collection. Long live Australian Music!”

Following on from the massive success of 2005’s She Will Have Her Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn, now it’s the men’s turn to come out to play and pay homage to the glory of the brothers Finn.
He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn is the male sequel to the critically-hailed female-voiced album She Will Have Her Way, which was released in October 2005 and went on to Triple Platinum sales in Australia and Double Platinum sales in New Zealand. All up, She Will Have Her Way is now nudging 300,000 sales, received ARIA nominations and unanimous critical praise.
Like its popular predecessor, He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn brings together a diverse collective of talent from Australia and the Finn brothers’ homeland of New Zealand to honour and celebrate these songwriting greats.
Musical legends such as Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes, Paul Dempsey, Darren Hayes, Chris Cheney, former members of Midnight Oil [in their new band The Break] and Empire Of The Sun’s Luke Steele [here fronting his original outfit, The Sleepy Jackson] share the stage with popular contemporaries and newcomers such as Sydney acts Boy & Bear, Art Vs Science, Philadelphia Grand Jury and Angus Stone [of Angus & Julia Stone]; Melbourne artists Dan Sultan and Oh Mercy; Queenslanders Busby Marou; and New Zealand’s Artisan Guns and Kody Nielson.
Each artist brings their unique musical perspective to reinterpreting a Finn classic, along with the odd hidden gem from the brothers’ extraordinary catalogue.
Some have come to respectfully bow down to the originals, not wanting to mess with perfection. Others have come to reinvent. Whatever their approach, the 16 acts on He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn have brought their own strong personality and voice to the universally acclaimed songs of Tim and Neil Finn.
Among the rare musical moments presented on He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn, The Living End’s Chris Cheney makes a rare solo appearance, delivering an edgy take on “Distant Sun”, backed only by his electric guitar; Paul Kelly joins forces with Angus Stone to offer a most delicate duet of “Four Seasons in One Day”; while the hypnotic Dan Sultan fronts the normally instrumental surf outfit The Break for an appropriately swampy take on “Shark Attack”.
Elsewhere, Jimmy Barnes rocks up “Message To My Girl”, Darren Hayes croons “Not Even Close”, Art Vs Science goes psycho on “I See Red”, while Glenn Richards of Augie March has a party all on his own with his surprising choice of “She Got Body, She Got Soul” [Tim Finn’s showstopper from the soundtrack of the classic 1982 Aussie film Star Struck and the Split Enz album Frenzy].
Nowhere is the spectrum of the varying musical approaches more evident than in the two versions presented here of the Crowded House ballad, “Better Be Home Soon”. While Busby Marou tackle the song with a very traditional approach, accenting the track’s Irish folk roots, Luke Steele’s The Sleepy Jackson delivers an unexpectedly bent electronic interpretation of the same song.
As both Luke Steele and Darren Hayes point out in the new album's liner notes, there is something special in the Finns’ DNA. Whatever it is, it has got under the skin of literally millions of people right around the world, especially in Australia and New Zealand, making a very deep and real connection now spanning four decades.
The Finns' music continues to affect people from all generations. This was evidenced on She Will Have Her Way and is what primarily led Executive Producers John O’Donnell and Craig Hawker to decide to re-visit and re-engineer the concept with a male skew.
From the cerebral to the surreal, the delicate to the chaotic, the jovial to the soulfully tortured, the artistry of the Finn brothers’ work shines through in each of these 16 re-imagined versions of classic cuts from their incomparable song catalogue, all recorded exclusively for inclusion on He Will Have His Way: The Songs of Tim & Neil Finn.

A former train driver from Karratha WA, now a fully fledged singer-songwriter - Tenielle‘s music career has gone from strength to strength after taking out the major performance prize at the Telstra Road to Tamworth (TRTT) Final in January this year.
Since then Tenielle has released her debut EP “Better than leaving”, performed overseas as a guest of the New Zealand Country Music Awards, and cemented representation by Premier Artists and Other Tongues.
As if that wasn’t enough, Tenielle also recently returned from her TRTT prize winning trip to Nashville USA where she performed at the annual Americana Festival and secured a Mushroom Music publishing deal.
Kicking off the 10-day US trip, Tenielle performed at one of Nashville’s most iconic venues, The Bluebird Café, as part of an Australian showcase alongside legendary artists Tommy Emmanuel, Troy Cassar-Daley and Sara Storer.
Mushroom Music Creative Manager, Bill Page (also Telstra Road to Tamworth’s Head Judge) was with Tenielle and current TRTT Songwriter winner, Luke Webb in Nashville, and has worked closely with Tenielle since discovering her through last year’s TRTT Digital Heat. ”Tenielle has always shown such immense promise not only as a performer but as a songwriter. I have seen her grow and mature as a musician during the last nine months and that is down to her hard work and also taking every opportunity that has come her way.”
An avid songwriter, Tenielle was given the opportunity to explore her craft with some of America’s finest during one-on-one writing sessions with the likes of Mike Daly (Whiskeytown/Ryan Adams) and Andy Stochansky (Goo Goo Dolls, Shannon Noll), and also took part in song writing workshops at TenTen Music, the number one music publisher in Nashville.
Jewel Coburn, Co-President of TenTen Music, applauded Tenielle’s musical talents. “The fact that Tenielle attracted so much interest and praise during such a major event is proof of the quality of talent that the Telstra Road to Tamworth is identifying and fostering,” she said.
Tenielle will perform as part of the Telstra Road to Tamworth Semi-Final in December, during the Sydney Telstra 500 V8 Supercars event and will then hand over the reigns to a new performance category winner when the TRTT Final is staged in January during the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
Entries in this year’s Telstra Road to Tamworth digital heat and song writing category are open until 31st October 2010, for more details on how to enter visit www.telstra.com/trtt

BIRDS OF TOKYO – Birds Of Tokyo
Since their humble beginnings back in 2004, we’ve watched this Perth 4 piece Birds of Tokyo soar. Their self titled, third album was recorded between Sydney, London, Gothenburg and New York and delivers their most powerful collection of rock songs to date. Epic orchestral arrangements, euphoric hooks and emotionally charged melodies showcase the bands strong musicianship. The boys have come out guns blazing on this one.BLISS N ESO – Running On Air [PICTURED]
Only Bliss N Eso could take a Kasey Chambers song and turn it into a hip-hop tune. That’s just one of the ways these Sydney lads defy expectations with their fourth studio album Running On Air. After ten years together, Bliss N Eso have stretched themselves creatively on an album that’s their most introspective and personal to date.More J Award nominees will be announced over the coming months. Winners will be announced in the first week of December, after the culmination of Aus Music Month.
