We know there can only be one winner (Megan Washington), but due to the success and high standard of the entrants two runner-up prizes have been awarded, each worth $3,500.
Congratulations go to Eskimo Joe (Kav Temperley, Joel Quartermain and Stu Macleod) for “Foreign Land”, and Caitlin Harnett for her song “Tying Hands and Holding Shoelaces”.
"It’s such a great honour to be recognised for our song writing efforts and to be associated with the names Vanda and Young is a real buzz," said Kav Temperley from Eskimo Joe.
“Just to know that one of my songs has, in some way or another, connected with someone, is the loveliest feeling in the world and to be recognised in this songwriting competition is a dream. I feel like I have caught the moon! Music, to me, is a very healing and therapeutic thing, so the fact that all the money is going to a charity that reflects this is very special. I am so happy and grateful to be acknowledged. Thank you,” said Sydney based singer-songwriter Caitlin.

Sandy Mill has a unique and glorious voice. Just ask the people she has worked with…
She started her career in Auckland with four piece, Avant Garde band Spacesuit with fellow band members Darryn Harkness, Ben Holmes and Gabriel White. Having recorded and toured their debut album the band needed to move on.
It was time for some funk; Sandy fronted The Roughness with Nick Atkinson, Sam Lockley, Tom Atkinson, Kingsley Melhuish and Nick Eagles.
In New Zealand, she has performed, written and recorded with a number of amazing artists including Pitch Black, Epsilon Blue, Juse, Subware, Dub Asylum, Cassette and Sean Donnelly of SJD, who she also plays live with. These are just a few of the alliances she has made in NZ.
Sandy Mill moves to London.
Sandy first came to the attention of the UK press in 2003 with the release of ‘Moving On’ through the renowned Chillifunk label.
She built an incredible reputation with some of the best producers in the UK and Europe as a strong collaborator, with a knack of coming up with strong hooks and top lines, as well as solid lyrical content, which has led to many 12” vinyl releases, dance music compilations and exposure in the club music scene.
In the UK and Europe Sandy had the pleasure of writing with Lofty and Dr Bob Jones AKA East West Connection, and Lofty’s project Notenshun where a number of their tunes have been released on Chillifunk records and then picked up by Irma records . Other collaborations include Dick Trevor of Green Ohm, Mathijs Duringhof of and Moto (Flying High Records-Utrecht) and USA producer legend Eric Kupper. While residing there she also Moody Allen, Scallymatic Orchestra managed to work with Fellow antipodeans Darryn Harkness of New Telepathics, and Paul Smith otherwise known as Smithmonger. As well as the fore mentioned collaborations, Sandy did session work with the likes of Boy George, Placebo, Basement Jaxx and producer extraordinaire Flood.
Presently Sandy Mill is writing toward a debut solo album which has been on the ‘to do list’ for some time, but as you can see, she has been too busy working on other peoples records. The time is right and she isn’t the only one excited about her forthcoming musical endeavours.

Aspiring musicians in regional areas throughout Australia have a fantastic opportunity to enter this year’s Telstra Road to Tamworth national country music search – via the new digital heat and separate songwriter’s category.
Ensuring that distance is no barrier to fulfilling your country music dreams, Telstra has introduced the new categories to allow regional performers and songwriters the option to submit their entries online.
The Telstra Road to Tamworth presents an exciting avenue to help emerging music artists take their country music career to the next level, with recording opportunities in Nashville on offer as the top prize.
Country music’s hottest female trio and Telstra Road to Tamworth Ambassadors, The McClymonts, said these new initiatives were a fantastic addition to the program.
“It’s really tough getting a start in the music industry, so opportunities like the digital heat help open up doors for emerging music artists,” said Mollie McClymont, a former Telstra Road to Tamworth Grand Finalist.
Aspiring songwriters have until 1 November to enter the songwriter category of the Telstra Road to Tamworth, while performers wishing to enter the digital heat have until midnight on Sunday, 15 November.
The winning digital heat performer and three best songwriters will receive a trip to Sydney to join thirteen other heat winners to compete in “Boot Camp”, the next stage of the competition.
Boot Camp is a series of music development workshops where contestants will gain valuable experience and advice from leading music industry professionals, as well as the opportunity to rehearse with a full band and perform at one of Sydney’s biggest sporting events – the Sydney Telstra 500 V8 Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park in December.
The top eight performers and two best songwriters will be chosen from Boot Camp to progress through to the Telstra Road to Tamworth Finals in January 2010.

Voom first formed back in the early 90’s. Buzz Moller and Mac MacCaskill noodled away making music in their basement for years before anyone heard a thing. ‘Relax’ was the first single released to student radio and it became a well-known b net hit. Second single ‘Beth’ soon followed suit. Danny Manetto joined the band on bass and they played many venues around New Zealand and released the highly acclaimed debut album ‘Now I Am Me’ in 1998. Voom shows grew larger and larger; a particular highlight was performing in support of Pulp at the North Shore Events Centre. Ever since the release of ‘Now I Am Me’ Voom fans have been popping up in the most unusual places!? Well finally those fans have got a whole bunch of new material to enjoy.
2005 / 2006 has been was an exciting an interesting time for the band. New music, new record deals and exciting offers from overseas saw the normally dreamy Voom world turned in to a buzzing hive of activity. The band has seen several lineup changes over the years but none as dramatic and successful as the most recent group. Buzz Moller and Nick Buckton have been joined by Murray Fisher and Mike Beehre formally of Goodshirt. With Goodshirt, one of New Zealand’s most success pop bands, no-longer functioning as a band Murray and Mike have joined Voom full time and the music has never sounded better!
The ‘hello, are you there?’ album is a collection of heart-warming love ballads and toe tapping pop gems. A truly unpretentious distinctly kiwi record full of insightful songs about love lost and found.

With the release of brand new single 'Gold Canary', melodic magicians Cloud Control are very pleased to announce a co-headline tour with friends Leader Cheetah.
The ‘East Coast Smackdown Tour' will see the two bands play shows throughout November and December, with Leader Cheetah hitting the road in support of the limited edition vinyl release of their debut album 'The Sunspot Letters'.
Following shows across the country and festival appearances in the UK and Australia throughout 2009, Cloud Control are keen to showcase new songs from their forthcoming debut album, due out on Ivy League Records in early 2010.
'Gold Canary' is the first new music from the band since their infectious single 'Death Cloud'. With tribal chants culminating in what can only be described as a dub-step hoedown, 'Gold Canary' presents a band fully in control of their unique vision, and highlights a love of exploration and change that all true artists possess.
The past year has seen Leader Cheetah play a host of festivals as well as tour with Dan Auerbach, Elbow and Liam Finn. The ‘East Coast Smackdown Tour' will see the Adelaide four-piece return the road for their last tour of the year before they head into hibernation to record the follow-up to 'The Sunspot Letters'. Before then though, they'll be releasing the acclaimed album on limited edition vinyl, which will include a bonus 7" with three unreleased album out-takes.
