15 Dec 2006 :
Forget false Idols, Perth's Eskimo Joe is Australia's real success story in 2006. The 'Black Fingernails, Red Wine' album is now officially three times platinum based on real sales to the general public.
With the common place con in the music industry of fooling the general public with premature platinum awards to fake a perception of popularity that really doesn't exist, Warner Music's Eskimo Joe has gone the distance with a slow haul of steady sales over its 26 weeks of release.
Eskimo Joe is a real band playing real music. This is a band who has always been about the live performance and also knows how to write real songs. Their 2001 debut 'Girl' went Gold in Australia, while the follow-up 'A Song Is A City' introduced an evolved sound to their fans.
After building up the fan base over the course of 5 years, the third album 'Black Fingernails, Red Wine' was dropped on an established audience in June 2006.
Eskimo Joe originally formed as Freud's Pillow in Perth in Western Australia in 1997 when drummer Joel Quartermain and guitarist Stuart MacLeod grouped to enter the Australian National Campus Band Championship.
The band recently returned from New York where they performed at the CMJ Festival.
A US release for 'Black Fingernails, Red Wine' will happen in early 2007.

15 Dec 2006 :
Compass Brothers Records is delighted to announce the signing of iconic Australian country artist and songwriter James Blundell.
With the release of his self-titled debut album in 1989 James became the first of a new breed of Australian country artists to find a younger audience and achieve gold and platinum sales. He enjoyed crossover success and was for many years the highest selling country artist in Australia. He has written hits for Lee Kernaghan, Slim Dusty and Jimmy Little and is the recipient of nine CMAA Golden Guitar Awards and four ARIA nominations.
Compass Bros Managing Director Graham Thompson is thrilled to welcome James to the boutique label that is also home to Adam Brand, Melinda Schneider, Anne Kirkpatrick, The Sunny Cowgirls, Dianna Corcoran, Brendon Walmsley and Jim Haynes.
"James changed the landscape of Australian country music when he emerged in the late 80's,"recalls Graham. "He absorbed the tradition of the great story tellers of Australian country music and served it up fresh in a way that really connected with a broad audience. His music resonated with young and old, male and female, in the country and the city and paved the way for many of our contemporary country artists. He's got a lot of great songs and I can't wait to get him in the studio."
James is also excited about his new label:
"I am delighted, and more than a little flattered to be invited on to the Compass Brothers roster.
I believe that the label represents the perfect independent structure, in that it has a small roster, managed and promoted by an enthusiastic and proactive team, who all display a genuine enthusiasm and knowledge of the artists that they represent...coupled with the mechanics of a major distribution system.
To have a label headed by an individual with extensive knowledge of performance, songwriting and publishing, is a truly fresh breath of air. The preliminary conversations I have had with Graham Thompson are extremely exciting from an artist's perspective.
I'm also thrilled about the genuine relationship developing between my manager, Neil Richards, and the label, and it is a delight to see the acceptance of the vital role that management plays in the process of song selection, marketing and touring.
Neil presented the possibility of joining the label some months ago, and through a series of frank and professional discussions, we have arrived at a situation that I think will create the perfect outcome for both parties...artistic integrity directed into a successful commercial result.
Recording begins soon, and I am thoroughly looking forward to the experience."
Compass Bros will release a new single from James in February 2007 and an album in April.

Mushroom Music celebrate the signing of Kid Confucius, Sydney's dynamic 9-piece soul/hip hop/gospel/funk outfit. Meanwhile, the band prepare for the release of their eagerly anticipated sophomore album featuring their new genre defying single 'Closer'. The single is classic Detroit era Motown mixed with angelic falsetto vocals, African rhythmed heavy roomy kick drums reminiscent of a Timbaland production, slightly 80s sounding guitars and even some rock flutes and clarinets creating a nostalgic feel to this dedication to life in the city. The recording, produced by Sydney's producer de jour Buchman (AKA Tony Buchen), was given the final treatment it deserves, mixed by Grammy award winning engineer Russell Elevado (The Roots, D'Angelo, Talib Kwali) at Jimi Hendrix's own Electric Lady Studios in NYC. Expect a sound that conjures a Marvin Gaye soul symphony performed by the Beatles and conducted by Kanye West with a live show to match. Just recently the band walked away with the Dance Music Award for Best Urban Act.

Neighbours is one of the longest running television series produced in Australia and continues to have a high profile in England and throughout Europe.
Mushroom Music Publishing is the largest independent music publisher in Australia and New Zealand and has a substantial catalogue of songs covering the history of Australian music from the late Sixties to current chart toppers Eskimo Joe.
When Neighbours commenced production back in 1985, Mushroom Music Publishing and Mushroom Records provided most of the music to the show. This was a very successful relationship for many years. For a period of time the producers looked at other types of music supply.
Recently the producers of Neighbours reviewed the use of music in the show and decided to open negotiations with Mushroom Music Publishing and Liberation Records. It was obvious that the winning formula that served both parties so well for many years should be resurrected. As they said in The Blues Brothers, it was a case of getting the old band back together.
From March 2007, there will be a new sound to the show as they access the broad range of quality Australian music which Mushroom publishes. Mushroom Group Chairman Michael Gudinski has welcomed the move. "This is a natural association between two Australian companies that have made their mark in their respective fields in the international market. I am excited to renew this partnership which will give Neighbours great music and provides our artists with a worldwide audience. Everyone's a winner."

Sandi Thom is the 21st Century's flagship artist. She cemented herself as 2006's artist to watch when her debut single 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)' shot to #1 in both the United Kingdom and Australia. In Australia, the single is now certified platinum, having sold in excess of 100,000 copies and maintaining top spot on the National ARIA Singles Chart for seven weeks straight.
In January and February next year, Sandi Thom will undertake her first ever Australian tour, bringing her live show to Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. The announcement follows the exciting news of her upcoming promotional visit in November.
Thom's rise to stardom is one you'd expect of a fairytale. One evening whilst on her way to perform at a gig, her car broke down, leaving her stranded. It was whilst she was stuck by the side of the road that the idea to broadcast live shows over the internet crept into the Scottish singer-songwriter's mind.
Thom invested in a webcam and announced a 21-date 'tour' to be broadcast from her basement. As word spread about her phenomenal talent, each performance saw her audience swell, increasing from 70 to 70 000 in less than three weeks!
Thom's tour sparked record label interest, and upon its completion she signed a recording contract online. This became the first webcast signing in major record label history! Her debut album Smile... It Confuses People (out now through SonyBMG) was released just a few months later. It debuted at #1 in the UK and quickly rose to the Top 20 of Australia's ARIA chart.
Thom's emotive, powerful voice sets her apart from the pop generation of today. Unafraid to take a risk, she fuses killer melodies with whimsical lyrics on her sparsely-accompanied songs. Her music is upbeat and uncomplicated and has captured the world's attention, drawing comparisons to Alanis Morissette and Joni Mitchell.
Signing a recording contract on the strength of her live performance guarantees that Sandi Thom will not disappoint. She's sold out countless shows across the UK, and Australia will not be any different. Make sure you seize the chance to see this future superstar on her first ever Australian tour.

The Australian Country Music Achiever Awards - held in Sydney on Monday October 16 - saw ABC Music Publishing awarded Publishing Company of the Year for an incredible 5 years in a row!
The Achiever Awards, an activity of the leading industry body, the Country Music Association of Australia (CMAA), is an annual event that brings together the music industry in a night that celebrates and acknowledges the achievements of the many individuals and companies involved in making and promoting Australian country music.
The award was accepted by a surprised Head of ABC Music Publishing, Eloise Nolan: 'We're all very thrilled to have received this award and give our heartfelt thanks to the CMAA and it's members for bestowing it on us this year.'
'Any publishing company is only as good as it's roster, big or small, and the service it provides to those songwriters.'
'Over the past 5 years we've had the pleasure of working with a great group of both established and emerging country songwriters - from Sara Storer, Beccy Cole, Col Finley and Adam Harvey to John Kane, Olivia Crick, Mark Drilling
and Mike Flanders.''The big challenge for all of us in this industry is to now grow the future country music audience and ensure that it's music for both young and old by continuing to hunt out promising new writers and artists while giving our current writers and artists permission to draw on a broader canvas and not be afraid to experiment.'
ABC Music Publishing represents songwriters, composers, screen music writers and their works both locally and internationally and is administered by Mushroom Music Publishing.
