25 August 2008 : SNOW PATROL NEWS
Snow Patrol release their brand new album A HUNDRED MILLION SUNS through Fiction/Polydor on October 25.

The album is preceded by the fantastic single Take Back The City, this September. Take Back The City comes with a spectacular video shot in East London courtesy of acclaimed video director Alex Courtes (White Stripes ‘Seven Nation Army’).

The bands fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns was recorded through Summer 2008 in Hansa Studios in Berlin (where Bowie recorded ‘Low’, ‘Heroes’ & ‘Lodger’) and at Grouse Lodge deep in the Irish countryside. Written by Snow Patrol the album has been produced by long time producer Jacknife Lee (Bloc Party, REM, U2).

Snow Patrol are one of the biggest selling UK bands this decade and A Hundred Million Suns follows up the 2006 Number One, seven times platinum phenomenon Eyes Open which sold an incredible 2.1 million copies in the UK and over 1 million in the USA. Eyes Open achieved platinum awards across the world from the US and Canada to Germany, Australia and beyond, selling over 4.5 million copies in total. The single Chasing Cars has just received its 100,000th UK radio play and its 2 millionth download in the US.

Snow Patrol are among an elite group of UK artists to have achieved consecutive million selling albums – Eyes Open followed up 2003’s Final Straw which sold 1.6 million copies, achieving five times platinum status.

Gary Lightbody (vocals/guitars) says: "I'm so proud of this record. Everybody played out of their skin. Garret (Jacknife Lee) continued his progression from maverick genius to one of the best producers in the world. Musically, lyrically and sonically the best record we've made"

25 August 2008 : NEW SIGNING | DELTA SPIRIT
Mushroom Music has signed Californians, Delta Spirit.

The band was here recently for the Splendour in the Grass festival in support of the release of their album Ode To Sunshine (Dew Process).

First single Trashcan offers a taste of Delta Spirit's infectious retro rock, with other highlights of the album including People C'mon, Strange Vine and the epic Children.

Given the number of new fans the band managed to win over during their first visit to Australia, no doubt they will be back on our shores again in the not too distant future...

21 August 2008 : Snob Snubs The Scrilla For Chasing Ghosts
Snob Scrilla’s video clip budget for the single Chasing Ghosts is not being spent on elaborate stunts throwing money at suited up 9 to 5-ers, or well shot empty images of corporate greed. With the lyrics “cash, booze forego benevolence, these days it’s all about them dead presidents” as the catchy hook of the track, Snob took the video clip scrilla and attempted to prove himself wrong.

The Hip Hop for Youth off the Streets fundraiser scheduled to happen earlier in the month had been cancelled due to lack of funds. The cash secured a venue and Snob Scrilla will be performing along with 15 local acts on Friday 29th of August.

Snob Scrilla and the band will also be dropping in to the Macquarie Fields Outreach BBQ this week along with a few surprise guests to play basketball, beatbox and just hang out.

The Outreach program is a service for young people 12-21 who are at risk or disadvantaged. It provides a weekly safe and friendly environment to engage young people in discussion about their circumstances in order to provide positive alternatives to their current situation and to develop strength-based interventions on an individual needs basis.

The results will be shot by Snob’s friends and band mates (some of whom are professional camera operators – lucky) and edited to make a clip to be released later in the month.

The remainder of the video budget will be donated to Youth Off The Streets to provide text books, reading books, groceries for aftercare young people, board games, dance classes, cook books and kitchen equipment sets.

Snob Scrilla hopes to draw attention to all the great work done by Youth Off The Streets, a not for profit charity who operate programs all over NSW. Youth off the Streets support chronically homeless and drug addicted young Australians as they work to turn their lives around in addition to prevention programs like the group at Macquarie Fields.

The Hip Hop for YOTS Fundraiser is being held at the Campbelltown Arts Centre Performance Studio at corner of Camden and Appin Roads in Campbelltown on Friday 29th of August. Tickets will be $5 at the door with all funds going to Youth off the Streets Macquarie Fields and Airds Outreach Programs.

20 August 2008 : THE VINES ANNOUNCE NATIONAL 'MELODIA' TOUR
Following on from their incredible recent performances at this year’s Fuji Rock and Splendour In The Grass festivals, The Vines are pleased to announce that they will be embarking upon their first full length national album tour in over four years this coming October and November in support of their brand new long-player, MELODIA.

After their many well documented trials and tribulations, no one really had the right to expect to find THE VINES in such rude health in 2008, but with the release of MELODIA, the band have come full circle, recording their best album since 'Highly Evolved' and playing the finest live shows of their career. Anyone who has witnessed the band's incendiary sets at Splendour, Homebake or Big Day Out over the past two years will attest to the fact that as a live force they are now nigh on unstoppable.

“We can’t wait to get on stage and do it properly for all of our fans,” says singer Craig Nicholls. “We feel really good about the live show at the moment, and now with four albums to pick the set from it's going to be great to change the show a little bit every night. Let US entertain YOU."

THE VINES' story is well documented now, but for those who came in late, a brief synopsis reads something like this: THE VINES emerge from the Southern suburbs of Sydney on to the world stage with their debut album 'Highly Evolved' in 2002. Five NME cover appearances, Rolling Stone, Spin and The Face covers, 1.5 million albums sold worldwide, a famously unhinged appearance on The David Letterman show, festival performances at Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds, and sold out Australian, US and European tours follow. The underrated second album, 'Winning Days' is met with a hostile press reception as Craig Nicholls’ increasingly erratic and unpredictable behaviour leads to a very public breakdown on stage at the Annandale Hotel in Sydney. Tours and appearances are immediately cancelled, and finally an explanation for Nicholls' unhinged persona comes in the form of his diagnosis with Aspergers Syndrome. In 2006 the band re-emerge with the fast and loose buzzsaw rock of 'Vision Valley', as Nicholls and company slowly and cautiously re-build his confidence and ability to face the public again. Taking a risk, the band make a surprise appearance at the 2006 Splendour in the Grass festival, where against all the odds and expectations they produce one of the most memorable and euphorically received sets of the weekend. Thereafter follow appearances at Reading and Leeds to similar receptions and a sold-out Australian tour more than two years after the famous public meltdown. More festival appearances at Homebake, Big Day Out and the Great Escape continue to re-build the band’s reputation as the most exciting live act in the country.

Which brings us to 2008, and the release of MELODIA. With the first single HE’S A ROCKER having reacquainted the listening public with the trademark razor-sharp pop instincts that led to THE VINES becoming one of Australia’s most recognisable and passionately supported bands, the band will be releasing the album’s scorching opener GET OUT to coincide with the shows, a song that has immediately become a festival crowd favourite.

With this being the band’s first full national tour since 2004, and the band in the best health and live form of their career, expect tickets for THE VINES to sell out immediately. Click on image to view dates

12 August 2008 : DAVID BRIDIE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF MAKING MUSIC AND RELEASES FIRST SOLO ALBUM IN 5 YEARS
“This is the David Bridie you know but with a bigger sound of edgy guitar, whirling keyboards and anthemic vocals alongside his trademark textures, Pacific percussion beats and lyrics of wry social observation.” David Sly

“No wonder Bridie is feeling better this year. He's made what might be the best record of his career, 24 years after making his debut with Not Drowning Waving.” Noel Mengel

At first inspection, Succumb is a startling departure from David’s previous solo recordings.

It’s more lean and direct, almost abrasive for its confronting guitars and urgent rhythms. But listen closely and familiar signatures abound; lush, textural beds of intricately layered and densely overdubbed sound tapestries.

Not surprisingly, given David’s deep social justice concerns, many poignant songs were written in the wake of the 2007 federal election, and some earlier lyrics were adjusted after the election result. “After 12 years under the social conservatives, I see this as a time of possibility, an opportunity to move forward rather than be overwhelmed by despair,” says David. “A lot of the questions remain the same, but the beam of light shone upon them is brighter.”

While deliberately political, David resists being overtly dogmatic. Rather than chanting slogans or being polemic, he voices concerns that we should all be sharing, though it’s not only political intent that piques the album. Narratives embrace themes that are inherently Australian, in both character and geography, understanding our place in the Pacific, reaching across cultures, seeking ways to stretch across the divide. And always there’s a faint reminiscing of an older Australia, of more simplistic times that shaped the country we grew up in. He says we need to look at where we’ve been to figure out where we’re going, that the old stories and images are important stuff. “It’s too easy to get wrapped up in the here and now,” he warns. “There are so many other good stories to tell.”

The upbeat, positive sound of Succumb is a consequence of the people David worked with and the energy they brought; friends he trusts and respects, none more than guitarist Phil Wales, who has been among David’s closest musical allies over many years. Many other mates dropped in and contributed: Bart Willoughby, Alan and Stephen Pigram, MFTTC cellist Helen Mountfort, Rob Craw. “I loved going to work each day. It was like this long, continuous dinner party.”

And there is This Year Is Better Than Last Year – co-written with the Oils' Jim Moginie – which Bridie says reflects his personal frame of mind as well as his response to the change of federal government.

Ultimately, Succumb is the album of a working band, with dynamic contributions from PNG drummer Airi Ingram, Adelaide bass player Paul Cartwright and producer Chris Scallan adding keyboards. David is now looking forward to taking this vibrant song set on the road. “This sound straddles anything else that’s currently happening in music. And to me, that’s important.”

David Bridie will be touring Australia from October 4 including performances at the Australasian World Music Expo in November, which will showcase the region's finest indigenous, folk, roots and world music artists.

Succumb is out on August 9.

07 August 2008 : GYROSCOPE RE-SIGN TO MUSHROOM, GO GOLD AND HEAD OUT ON TOUR
Mushroom Music are psyched to re-sign Perth anthemic rockers Gyroscope as they celebrate their Breed Obsession album achieving gold sales. Congratulations to everyone who worked towards this well deserved accolade.

Having obtained a long line of sync opportunities including Snakeskin as Channel Ten’s theme for the AFL season, Mushroom are eager to continue championing Gyroscope as one of this country’s finest.

The band have just embarked on a 35 date national tour with Shihad and Sugar Army, in promotion of their latest single Australia.

07 August 2008 : THE FUTUREHEADS ANNOUNCE AUSTRALIAN TOUR
The Futureheads’ electrifying This Is Not the World (out now through Liberator) has catapulted these English rockers to the top of their game, and it’s with great pleasure The Frontier Touring Company confirms they will be returning to Australia this October. The gentlemen of The Futureheads will play in Australia for the first time in over three years, performing in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

With a fine touring history (they’ve supported the likes of the Pixies, Foo Fighters and Snow Patrol), The Futureheads have been earmarked as one of the UK’s finest bands. Killer harmonies and a rambunctious live show have encapsulated the attention of music lovers across the globe. Their single ‘The Beginning of The Twist’ has enjoyed considerable success, with Inpress declaring it to be “a f*** sight better than much of the mush that passes for British indie rock these days.”

The album courted similar accolades. The Age announced that “the Futureheads won’t be dragged into obscurity” while The West Australian praised the offering: “Each musical phrase not only inverts expectation but does so in a way that enlivens the journey of the song.”

It’s news.com.au that set the tone for the tour, however, describing This Is Not The World as “a solid album full of jerky, post-punk anthems that will sound even better live”.

Support for this tour will come from Melbourne ruffians Dash & Will. During their short time together they’ve already been invited to tour alongside the likes of The Kooks, Ben Lee and Matt Costa, and in December will take to the Homebake stage. Debut single ‘Pick You Up’ is three minutes of spunky, guitar driven pop that is just a taste of what’s to come. You’ll regret not arriving early for this show.

Baby Come On
By Dave Gibson and Justyn Pilbrow of Elemeno P. From the album: Elemeno P

THE INSPIRATION
Gibson, Pilbrow: It started as more of a 'let's have a song that is super up and really happy' and a clapping gospel-type feel rather than with chords melody or lyrics. So, weirdly enough, the feel came first.

THE LYRICS
Lyrically it was just inspired by life, by the juggling act that is being a Kiwi artist. We in the band all have jobs or businesses that we run at the same time. While we were recording this record I was also sending out invoices, extending overdrafts and spending hours in front of my MYOB (accounting software) so I just wrote about that and how we'd forget it all in the weekend and go out to Crow Bar or Deshlers and put it all on the credit card.

THE RECORDING
We recorded it in our own little basement studio in the middle of winter, so the vibe in the studio was kinda moody but it still came out happy as. Lucky huh?

WHAT THEY LIKE ABOUT THE SONG.
I love that it has lots of hand-claps and a big chant to start it off. It's been a while since I've heard that.

AND WHO SHOULD COVER IT?
Any Finn would be cool - Neil, Tim or Liam. They're fun dudes but with quite an introspective side. I'd love to see their take on the song.

Dreams in My Head
By Anika Moa. From the album: In Swings the Tide

[PICTURED]

THE INSPIRATION
It was the guitar riff that came first and then the melody and the words - I was in Vanuatu listening to Bloc Party loudly and then it all hit me. Then we walked around the island and I had to stop whenever some of the song came to me, it took about 30 minutes to write.

THE LYRICS
I had a lustful one night stand that was completely unrequited. I had lots of time to think about my love for this person while on Vanuatu. It was heaven and hell all rolled into one for me.

THE RECORDING
I knew what I wanted and to have the best musicians in the country know me and my music and what I wanted was amazing. I heard the song recorded and finished in my head as soon as I began writing it. I had the band to play that feel and Bruce Lynch to write the string parts and I was happy and content after that. My song was fully realised.

WHAT SHE LIKES ABOUT THE SONG
I like that it comes straight from the soul, it's catchy and wild.

WHO SHOULD COVER IT?
I wish the Mint Chicks could do it again - they're choice. Or Kora. Or Tiki Taane - cos they're bros!

Gather to the Chapel
By Liam Finn. From the album: I'll Be Lightning

THE INSPIRATION
It was the passing of Paul Hester that inspired me to write this song. But I wanted it to be more about the experience of losing a loved one, how it brings people back together and the humbling perspective you seem to gather from that kind of intensity. It was the first time I had experienced something like this and I suppose I found it quite cathartic to express the way it made me feel. Music can really link us emotionally, and give comfort when going through these landmarks of our lives. Suicide leaves everyone with such a mixed bag of unresolved emotions ... anger, confusion, regret, guilt and unfathomable sadness, but ultimately I don't think any of that can shadow the fact that you loved the person and would want them to know that. I hoped that this song would hold more of a beautiful positive sentiment than a depressing, sad one. I've had quite a few instances where people have thought this song was about a wedding. I find it amusing - well, why not? Songs can mean different things to people.

THE LYRICS
Gather to the chapel was written pretty quickly really ... I don't really remember what came first, the music or the lyrics, but the atmosphere of the song was infectious and I had the chorus almost annoyingly rolling around my head for days, but I guess that can be a good sign.

THE RECORDING
I didn't demo the song as I wanted to record it for the first time in the studio. I believe that you capture something more honest and natural the first time you record it ... and quite often slave over trying to recreate that magical mood or performance you got in the demo when re-recording it in a studio. Therefore the song was mostly shaped around a simple live vocal and acoustic guitar take, as I wanted them to be the most important part. From there it was coloured in with guitar loops, fuzzed out octave guitar, simple drums, tape-looped strings and lots of layered harmonies.

WHAT HE LIKES ABOUT THE SONG
My favourite part of the recording is probably the bridge ... it's the first time bass features in the song and the trill strings really add an eerie quality before the last chorus resolves all the tension.

WHO SHOULD COVER IT
I'd love to see it performed by some kind of choir. I think it'd sound great a capella and all the harmonies would be joyous.

With Sharing Space, Bondi powerhouse COG have backed up the talent evident on their debut. Epic in scope and undeniably intelligent and original, the prog-rock trio are as impressive on record as they are on stage. Equally at home delivering a paean to a daughter (Bird of a Feather) or an indictment of corporate culture (Are You Interested?), this is the work of a band with something to say.

COG: "We are fucking stoked to get this J Award nomination. It means a lot coming from triple j, we are so grateful for all the support we get from the triple j listeners and all the j crew. If there is one award in Australia that we would want to be nominated for it is the J Award, it's an honor to be included along side such awesome Australian bands."
