FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What are the most common licenses that Mushroom Music Issues? Synchronization Licenses - which as the name suggests, allows you to synchronise a publishing copyright to other audio/Visual material. Usually in relation to the following media:

Film
Television
Video
Advertising
Sell Through Video
Corporate Video
Internet

Premium CD's - Giveaway CD's Lyric Reprints - for use in books, website etc.

2. What permissions do I require to use a song in my project?
There are two copyrights that need to be cleared in order to license an original song for use - the publishing copyright and the master recording copyright:

Publishing - for the use of the musical work, the lyrics and music written by the song's composer. The composer's publisher usually controls rights to the song.

Master Recording - the actual recorded performance of a song, whose main exploitation usually appears on a commercially released CD. The recording artist's record company usually controls rights.

3. How do I find who holds the Publishing and Master Recording Copyrights?
If you wish to find out who hold the relevant copyrights to a song, you can contact the Research Department at AMCOS.
http://www.amcos.com.au

You will need to fill out an AMCOS Research form, which can be found at:
http://www.apra.com.au/license/MlaPdfs/RecResearch.pdf

If you are looking for the composers names or the performers of a particular song, you can do a search at the APRA website:

4. What if I wish to do a re-record for our production?
You will only require a Publishing license for the use.

5. How much will a license cost?

There are a number of factors we need to consider when formalising a quote for you. The best way for us to formalise a ballpark quote for you is if you fill in the ‘Licence Request Forms’ that you will find on the Television, Film or Advertising & Corporate licensing pages of our web site.

Keep in mind that we use the following parameters when formulating a ballpark quote, and that any use is subject to final approval by the composer on all fees, context and details:

  • ‘The Song’
  • What sort of project you wish to use it in (Film? TV? Advertising? Corporate Video? Short Film? Giveaway CD?)
  • How long you require the license for.
  • Which different mediums you require your license to cover (TV, Film, Video, DVD, Radio, Premium CD, Corporate Video etc)
  • The popularity of the song you are requesting.
  • Which Territories you wish to licence for your project (Aust/NZ/Worldwide)
  • How much of the song you wish to use and how you wish to use it.
  • Whether you wish to change the lyrics in some form or if you wish to re-record the song.
